Lisbon’s underground reaches most of the city's neighbourhoods, and you can easily get around town only resorting to this means of transport. However, when it comes to buses, you unfortunately can’t really depend that much on their timetables - waiting times are something people complain about a lot, and there’s some room for improvement. The new Mayor has focused a lot of his efforts on transforming Lisbon into a greener city, mostly by introducing new bicycle routes in the city center - but don’t forget those tricky hills, an electric bike will probably be the best option to get around this charming mediterranean gem.

The comfort of going straight from work to the beach may or may not have contributed to a 39% sharp rise in new businesses in 2022. It is fair to say that Lisbon’s startup ecosystem has been growing into a standard worldwide, and as the city attracts new talent, it also starts to see the results: innovation, opportunities and progress.

One of our favorite spots is Gulbenkian - a cultural center with several exhibitions over the year, concerts, ballet and a big garden to enjoy Lisbon’s sunny days. Common Questions about Lisbon
Lisbon might be one of the most expensive cities to live in, in Portugal. However, you can live comfortably with less than you’d expect. It all depends on your own interests and goals. For a single person living in Lisbon, considering that rent is around 700€ a month, and that you have around the same amount in monthly costs of living, a comfortable salary would be around 1500€ a month.
Lisbon is very open-minded, filled with young people and quite progressive. You’ll find that it is LGBTQIA+ friendly, and some areas are more so - such as Intendente, Anjos and Graça, Bairro Alto, and so on.
Lisbon is close to many beaches, it is sunny all year round, and it presents you with a not so cold winter. In the end, for an European city, the weather is nice and welcoming, and that’s a major attracting factor. Besides that, it has become popular due to how friendly people are, how cheap it is compared to other countries in Europe, among other reasons. The fact that the Lisbonites are very welcoming towards foreigners also helps, as does the fact that Portuguese people in general are good at speaking other languages. Besides, it started attracting a lot of international students over the years, as Lisbon has great Universities and exchange programmes - alongside increasing tourism, we think that might have helped a lot.
That depends on the area where you live, and the goals you have for your kids. International schools are usually expensive - but definitely worth your money. However, public schools in Lisbon are also great - the only offset is that your kids might struggle to have classes in Portuguese.
Foreigners looking to buy a home in Portugal face no restrictions - you'll only be required to have a VAT number (also known as a NIF or número de contribuinte). There is usually no extra paperwork or criteria you need to meet in order to purchase a home.
Lisbon is perfectly safe. According to the European Safety Observatory, it scores as one of the safest European capitals, and the vast majority of tourists never experience any problems during their stay.
